XXXG-01W Wing Gundam

XXXG-01W Wing Gundam is one of gundam type mobile suits from the fictional anime series Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. The Wing Gundam is one of the five Gundams based on the XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero, developed by Doctor J and most closely resembling the original Wing Gundam Zero. The Wing Gundams armarments are its beam sabers, vulcan guns, machine cannons, but its most powerful weapon is the buster rifle that could destroy several mobile suits in a single blast, but it can only be limited to three shots per battle. Wing Gundam is also able to transform into bird mode, increasing its mobility and giving it the ability to fly while on Earth.

Wing Gundam was launched to Earth to fight OZ during Operation Meteor in AC 195, with Heero Yuy as its pilot. It was used in several attacks against OZ, but it was ultimately self-detonated by its pilot Heero Yuy when Lady Une threatened to attack the colonies if the Gundam pilots didn't surrender.

OZ ace pilot Zechs Merquise, who had been fighting against Heero and Wing Gundam when before it was self-detonated, felt unsatisfied at this conclusion, and by gathering the remains of Wing Gundam and bringing in more Gundanium alloy from space, rebuilt the Wing Gundam. His intention was to finish his fight with Heero, but Heero decided not to accept Zechs' "kindness" and fought using XXXG-01H Gundam Heavyarms instead. At this time, the Heavyarms pilot Trowa Barton used Wing Gundam to defend the battleground against any would-be intruders.

Later, OZ began to expand into space. Being created to operate specifically within a planet's atmosphere, the Wing Gundam was unable to function in space, forcing Heero to abandon it on Earth. It was found underwater and salvaged by Gundam supporter Sally Po. Later the transport plane that was carrying the Wing Gundam was sunk underwater when Sally was captured by OZ. After helping Sally in escaping and recovering the Wing Gundam before OZ's troops could seize it, Lucrezia Noin was given the Wing Gundam by Sally in order to help defend The Sanc Kingdom. Heero was reunited with Wing Gundam at the Sanc Kingdom, where he used it to defend Relena Peacecraft from the Romefeller Foundation.

Heero would take Wing Gundam to Luxembourg to fight against OZ who were trying to crush The Treize Faction. The Wing Gundam was damaged in the battle and subsequently abandoned. (Quatre Winner recovered and used it in the manga, but not in the anime.) The suit was captured by OZ, who repaired it and equipped it with booster rockets capable of sending it into space, however at that time there were no longer any capable pilots who could pilot the Wing Gundam. After coming out of her coma, Lady Une took the Wing Gundam into space, and used it to push Treize Khushrenada out of the way of the space fortress Libra's main cannon. Wing Gundam subsequently took the brunt of the cannon blast, sustaining heavily damage, and was presumably destroyed sometime after.

Trivia

  • The first on-screen appearance of the Wing Gundam was actually in G Gundam, which was concluded shortly before Gundam Wing aired. The Wing Gundam was among the numerous mobile suits that made brief cameo appearances in G Gundam's final battle, although its appearance at the time was relatively unrefined compared to the final version seen in Gundam W.
  • The Wing Gundam has a somewhat neglected history throughout Gundam W, despite being the personal mobile suit of the main character. Several times throughout the series, it is left behind, blown up, or substituted for another gundam/mobile suit until it is abandoned altogether by Heero Yuy for its ancestor, Wing Zero. Despite its history of short-term use and constant destruction, the Wing Gundam is viewed as the central Mobile suit of Gundam W rather than the Wing Gundam Zero or Wing Zero Custom. In the manga adaptation however, Wing Gundam is less neglected.
  • It is often misunderstood that Wing Gundam is the previous form of Wing Gundam Zero, similar to Shenlong and Deathscythe Gundam's upgrades into Altron and Gundam Deathsycthe Hell. In truth, Wing Gundam was the only Gundam of the original 5 to never be upgraded, rather it was replaced.
  • Treize Kushrenada was the only person throughout the entire Gundam W anime to ever call Wing Gundam by its actual name. Anyone else, including Heero Yuy, simply referred to it as Gundam 01.
  • In the manga, Heero does decide to use Wing in his duel against Tallgeese, unlike the anime where he chooses to use Trowa's Heavyarms.
  • Unlike Hajime Katoki's XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero custom, the redesigned Wing Gundam can go into bird mode.
