Richard L. Yuengling, Sr.

Richard L. Yuengling Sr. ( ) was known for being the fourth co-president and manager of D.G. Yuengling and Son along with his brother F. Dohrman Yuengling. The D.G. Yuengling and Son brewery is the oldest brewery in the United States still ACTIVE to this day.

Early Life

Richard L. Yuengling was born to Frank D. Yuengling and Augusta C. Yuengling (née Roseberry) in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, on July 16, 1915. Richard was the grandson of Frederick Yuengling and great-grandson of David Yuengling.

Yuengling was raised in the Frank D. Yuengling Mansion along with his siblings Frederick, F. Dohrman, Augusta and twin brother David Gual. Author Pamela Carol Mac Arthur described the children "hav[ing] the privilege of living in utter opulence" on the "magnificent" grounds of their mansion, which even included its own built-in car wash system for the chauffeur. This mansion was built by Frank D. Yuengling between 1911 and 1913 and was used as a family home until 1978, after which it was donated and added to the National Register of Historic Places. The first floor had eight "spacious rooms" and is executed in neo-Jacobean architecture. The second floor had seven "large rooms", while the third floor contained six rooms.

Yuengling married Marjorie "Marge" Hood, daughter of Lieutenant John Park Hood and Marjorie Koch Hood. She was born on December 20, 1921, in Pottsville. Marjorie was a member of the United States Golf Association, the Schuylkill Country Club and the Pottsville Club. One of their children was Richard L. "[...]" Yuengling Jr., who eventually became president and owner of D. G. Yuengling & Son himself.

Business

After their father's death in 1963, Richard L. and F. Dohrman took over the D.G. Yuengling and Son company as co-owners and managers. This marked the fourth patrilineal generation that had owned the company in the Yuengling family.

Later life

Yuengling was described as the "last of a generation of gentleman that can never be again." Indeed, author John Hazard Forbes has written "the old guard's world is passing away as quickly as the old guard itself."

Unfortunately, in his old age, Yuengling was stricken with Alzheimer's disease. He died on March 25, 1999, after which he was interred at the family burial plot at the Charles Baber Cemetery in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Marjorie, who died in 1997, is buried next to him.

In his lifetime, Yuengling helped to secure further wealth for the expanding Yuengling family. His son, Richard L. Yuengling Jr., for example, is listed as a billionaire on Forbes and the world's 1241st wealthiest person as of early March 2014.
