Gurkha cigars
Gurkha is a luxury cigar brand becoming known for its smooth cigars and unique packaging.
History
While on vacation in India in 1989, founder Kaizad Hansotia learned of a locally produced cigar named after the Gurkha warriors. Hansotia saw potential in these cigars and purchased the rights to the cigar for $143 and moved the operation to the Dominican Republic.
The brand did not see much success in the United States until 1995 when it stuck an investment deal with Miami Cigar Company. Hansotia started designing lavish looking cigar boxes and display cases as well as putting the cigars in glass tubes instead of plastic wrappers. Sales then improved.
