Wei Huaxiang

Wei Huaxiang (; born January 1972) is a Chinese politician and diplomat who has served as the Ambassador of China to Sri Lanka since August 2026. A member of the Chinese Communist Party, he previously served as Consul General of China in Ho Chi Minh City and held several positions in the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China and the People's Government of Shandong.

Biography

Wei was born in January 1972 in Dongying, Shandong, China. He joined the Chinese Communist Party in July 1993 and began working in July 1995. He received postgraduate training in political economy at the Central Party School of the Chinese Communist Party and holds a Doctor of Economics degree.

From July 1995 to September 2001, Wei worked for the Political and Legal Affairs Commission of the Dongying Municipal Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, where he served successively as a staff member and deputy section chief. He subsequently pursued doctoral studies in political economy at the Central Party School from September 2001 to July 2004.

After completing his studies, Wei worked as an economist in the Human Resources Department of the China International Electronic Commerce Center from July 2004 to July 2005. He subsequently joined the Office of the National Leading Group for Rectifying and Standardizing Market Economic Order, where he served in its Publicity and Training Group between 2005 and 2008, eventually becoming deputy head of the group.

In October 2008, Wei joined the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China, serving as deputy director and subsequently director of the Policy and Regulations Division of the Department of Market Order. He later served as director of the division responsible for the management of the slaughtering industry. From September 2011 to May 2013, Wei served as vice chairman of the Department of Commerce of the People's Government of Shandong. In June 2013, he was appointed vice mayor of Linyi, and subsequently held additional positions within the municipal government and the administrative bodies responsible for the Mengshan Tourism Area and Linyi Mall.

Wei served as deputy secretary-general of the People's Government of Shandong from January 2016 to June 2019. He subsequently joined the Shandong Agricultural Development Credit Guarantee Company, serving first as deputy party secretary and general manager from June to October 2019, and later as party secretary and chairman from October 2019 to January 2022.

In May 2022, Wei was appointed Consul General of China in Ho Chi Minh City, serving until May 2025. He subsequently served as a first-level inspector in the Department of Asian Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China.

In August 2026, Wei was appointed Ambassador of China to Sri Lanka, succeeding Qi Zhenhong.
