Ureonggaksi Iyagi

Ureonggaksi is 'Tale of Lady Mud Snail' in English. UREONG means a freshwater snail. GAKSI means a bride. And IYAGI means a story, Korean folktale.

Ureonggaksi came from Sejeon-ri, Songdong-myeon, Namwon-si, Jeollabuk-do.

Recording in a book

The first of August, 1979, Pansun-Choi in Namwon-si, Jeollabuk-do, narrated Ureonggaksi. Then Raeok-Choi and Hyeonmo-Kang recorded in a book. Finally, it was published in 1980.

Summary

Long time ago, there were a mother and a son. When the son went out and came back, there was a meal everyday. The son wondered that who did. It turned out Ureonggaksi did. This story has two conclusions. One comes to a happy ending but another is a tragedy. In the happy story, bachelor and maiden would be married. But in the sad story, the mother didn't like Ureonggaksi. So she kicked Ureonggaksi out to a straw mat and torched. But she didn't know that her son was there. Because her son fell in love, so he decided to follow Ureonggaksi. So, in a straw mat, the son and Ureonggaksi died.
