Shemal Fernando
Commodore Shemal Fernando, RSP, VSV, USP, psc, FCMI, SLN was a Sri Lankan Naval officer and athlete. He is the former Director Naval Administration.
Educated at the prestiges Royal College Colombo. He joined the Sri Lanka Navy as an Officer Cadet in the Executive Branch in 1979. After successful completion of officer training as a Midshipman he was commissioned as a Sub-Lieutenant.
Fernando is a graduate of the Naval War College, he a holds an MSc in Management and is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute. Reaching the rank of Commodore as one of the youngest to hold that rank and was later promoted to the post of Director Naval Administration, which he held until his retirement.
Commodore Fernando has been awarded the gallantry medal Rana Sura Padakkama for individual acts of bravery in combat, the service medals Vishista Seva Vibhushanaya, Uttama Seva Padakkama and Sri Lanka Armed Services Long Service Medal.
After his retirement he has been a regular contributer to local news papers. A member of the executive council of the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka, he was the manager of the Sri Lankan Olympic Contingent.
