Norman Gunewardene

Norman Gunewardene is a renowned Sri Lankan corporate leader & executive, who holds and has held many prestigious corporate positions in Sri Lanka and the region. He is the former Chairman of Aitken Spence & Co. Ltd. which is one of the largest conglomerate in the island, Odel Investments (Pvt) Limited and Odel Foundatiom. He has been the Honorary Consul for New Zealand in Sri Lanka.

Educated at the prestigious Royal College Colombo, he joined the Royal Ceylon Navy in 1952 and had his training at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth and The INDIAN Midshipman’s Training Establishment, Bombay where he won the President of India’s plaque for the best all round Midshipman of the course .

He later joined Bonars Ceylon Limited, a marine engineering company, in 1956, and then Aitken Spence & Company Limited in 1958. Counting 44 years of service in Aitken Spence & Co. Ltd., he was it’s Chairman in 1995/96 and remained a non-executive director until his retirement, in 2002. He served as the Vice Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka, as a Member of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission from 1997 -2000 and as a Director of Sri Lanka Telecom Limited from 2000-2003
