Ramesh Pandey

Ramesh K. Pandey is a member of Indian Forest Service1, 1996 batch, Uttar Pradesh cadre. He did his masters in Botany with specialisation in Forest Ecology and a Post Graduate Diploma in Environmental Science (Environmental Pollution and Management). He is also accompanished with AIGNFA Honours Diploma, equivalent to M.Sc. Forestry from Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy2, Dehradun. He had actively been involved in protection, conservation and management of wildlife and natural resource management for more than 10 years including his stint in Katerniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary (2005–2008), a Project Tiger3 area under Dudhwa Tiger Reserve4 (Uttar Pradesh). He has won WWF-PATA 5 award in 2001 for his outstanding contribution in tiger and wildlife conservation. He has been working on field monitoring of wild animals including big cats. His works on enforcement and organised wildlife crime particularly on Bawarias poachers and other wandering gangs has been instrumental in revival of tiger population in Katerniaghat and other part of Terai in Uttar Pradesh.Presently he is on deputation to GoI and working as Regional Deputy Director (Northern Region),Wildlife Crime Control Bureau,New Delhi 6 (WCCB). He is also involved in implementation of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of wild Fauna and Flora)7 in the Northern Region of the country and works as Assistant Management Authority (AMA), CITES-India 8.

Achievements:

1. Gold Medal for achieving 1st position in Purvanchal University in M.Sc. final examination in 1992. ( Honoured by Governor of Uttar Pradesh )

Field Experience:
More than 10 years field experience in the area of conservation, protection and management of wildlife and natural resource management including almost 5 years working experience in Tiger landscape (Pilibhit-Dudhwa-Katerniaghat). Besides this he has been working on various aspect of wildlife crimes, illegal trade of wildlife derivatives, legal issues, trans-boundary coordination, capacity building of [...] edge level staff in combating wildlife offences etc. He has been working on problems relating to organized wildlife crimes by Bawaria poachers in Northern India 18.
His effort in reviving and restoring the Katerniaghat and drawing attention on forgotten tigers of Pilibhit are some of the significant works in the field of tiger conservation. The success story of Katerniaghat got voice in Rajya Sabha during call attention motion on tiger conservation crisis in India. He also worked extensively on Gharial conservation in river Girwa particularly in fascilitating natural breeding of Gharials from 5 nests in 2005 to 27 nest 2009. From July' 2008 he is working on issues related to organised wildlife crime and trans-national illegal trade of wildlife derivatives, regional co-operation and co-ordination, capacity building of enforcement agencies and implementation of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of wild fauna and flora (CITES)in the country.
