Key West Alternative Energy Center

The Key West Alternative Energy Center1 is a program dedicated to utilizing new methods of renewable energy and saving the environment. The program is run in tandem by teachers Josh Clearman and Scott Douthitt at Key West high school in Key West, Florida. Participants include students and volunteers who are motivated by a common goal, to have one car running on the alternative energy source Biodiesel by March 1st, 2009. The Alternative Energy Center successfully installed the first wind turbine in the Florida Keys November 17, 2009.

Awards and honors

The Key West Alternative Energy Center has been the Recipient of numerous notable awards devoted to being "green" and environmentally friendly. In October 2009, the group was awarded with the Serve to Preserve Green Schools Award by Governor Charlie Crist. The same year they were awarded with the Hewlett-Packard Innovation in Education grant. In 2008, they received the Green Living award from the Florida Keys Glee Association2.
