Birring

Birring is a small clan of Jatts in Punjab, India. Birring is also spelled as Billing, Baring, Benning, Warring.

Birring people are descendents of Jarg ruler Jagdeo Panwar. Deol, Dleu and Aulakh are also of this lineage. According to research by H.S.Duleh, Birrings are decendents of Panwar or Pawar Rajputs. Recent research has also shown that Aulakh, Ball, Baring, Billing, Mander, Tiwana, and Shekhon are all descendents of the same rajput tribe which joined Raja Jagdeo while moving from Rajasthan to Punjab. Raja Jagdeo had settled in Jarg area in 12th century.

Birring people are scatterred all over Punjab and don't have very high concentration in any area though most of the Birring Jatts are found around Dhuri. There are five to six villages of this clan such as Kherhi, Dhadogal, Isrha around Dhuri which spell their surname as Billing. Seh village near Khanna in Ludhiana district was founded by Baba Bhakari of Billing sub-caste. The most prominent abode of Birring people is a village by same name in Jalandhar district. A substantial people from this village have immigrated to England. Other prominent villages of this clan are Bhaini Birring in Ludhiana district; Macchhrai Khurd, Mudki and Raikot in Fatehgarh Sahib district; Salar, Narike, Gowara and Khanpur in various parts of Punjab. They also dwell in Kanjhli and Dhamo Majra in the district of Sangrur. Some Billing houses are also found in villages of Kaonke Kalan and Mahnpur in the district of Ludhiana, Rurki Uchhi and Khojra-Khojri near Sirhind and Chakk Mafi near Khanna. Billing Jatts are also settled in few villages in Patiala district.

Though most Birring people are Jatt Sikhs, there are a few koothey dalits who once being the slaves of the Birring clan, have adopted the surname Birring themselves. This trend is common amongst dalits today due to the ease of laws regarding name change in modern India , and the introduction of Rashan Cards as a form of ID. Such practises are looked down upon and were considered punishingly taboo by the Jat people living in rural Punjab.

The pioneer of Babar Akali Lehar, Baba Kishan Singh Warring is the most prominent person from this very small clan.

Birring is a fairly common German surname. Binning is a rare surname for Northern Scottish people.

Birang (बिरंग) gotra Jats are also found in Maharashtra.
