Fluffy (Creepshow)

Fluffy is a fictional carnivorous monster created by special effects master Tom Savini.

Origins

The monster is based on a creature mentioned in a short story by Stephen King titled The Crate, which was later dramatized in the 1982 cult horror film, Creepshow.

In the story version from Fantasy Annual III (1981, Pocket Books, ISBN: 0-671-41272-8), the creature lives in an old crate, dating back to an Arctic Exhibition from June 19, 1834. Although described as being small and wolverine-like, in the movie it closely resembles an ape and is featured in a story in a fictional horror comic called Creepshow from the movie of the same name.

Movie Adaption

In the 1982 movie Creepshow, "Fluffy" is played by an uncredited actor named Darryl Ferrucci.

Plot: Mike Latimer, a janitor employed at the fictional Amberson Hall flips his quarter whilst deciding what part of the university to clean first. On its way down, the coin rolls under a crawl space and when Mike goes to retrieve it, he makes the startling discovery of a crate, dating back several decades.

He calls Professor Dexter Stanley, who is attending a party with his friend and fellow professor Henry Northrup. Henry has brought along his loud-mouthed wife Wilma, so he is more than happy to leave.

Mike and Dexter carry the crate on to a table, and Mike thinks he feels something shifting inside. Dexter too comments on the weight of the crate, but Mike tries to enlighten their curiosity by saying that it probably only contains fossilised plants. After opening the crate slightly, both men hear a chirping sound and Mike puts his arm inside, only to be yanked into the crate and devoured by the crate's man-eating inhabitant.

Frightened and shocked, Dexter runs upstairs and finds his grad student Charlie Gereson is still in the building. Charlie and Dexter negotiate for a bit, but while this is going on the beast has pushed its box back under the stairwell. When Charlie goes to have a look at the carnage, he sees all the blood and suspects Dexter of murdering Mike.

Unbeknownst to Charlie, the monster is still at large. While attempting to "measure the bite marks" Charlie is attacked and becomes the monster's next victim. Dexter can do nothing to help and flees to Henry's house.

After spilling his guts to Henry in full detail, Henry seemingly is curious and wants to investigate what Dexter was talking AbOUT. After putting Dexter to sleep, Henry leaves a note for Wilma to come meet him at Amberson Hall.

Henry mops up all the blood and awaits Wilma's arrival. When Wilma arrives drunk, Henry tells her a story regarding Dexter and an unnamed woman, but is met with little seriousness. As Wilma advances towards the crawl space, she is attacked by Henry who attempts to awaken the creature. After he calms down, Wilma proceeds to verbally abuse Henry (such abuse lead to Henry's decision to lure her there in the first place). The noise awakens the monster and Wilma is also eaten.

After finding a padlock, Henry carefully locks the beast in its box and drags it into the back of his automobile, where it is dumped in a deep section of Riders Quarry. Although Henry and Dexter believe the creature has drowned, the monster does in fact escape and the story ends with its eyes staring at the audience.
