Nathan Grantham

Nathan Grantham is a fictional character who appeared in the "Father's Day" segment of the cult horror movie Creepshow.

Nathan Grantham was a rich, somewhat sadistic tycoon. It is unknown how he came to wealth, but it implied that he rose to power through illegal activity in comments made by his daughter Bedelia when she called him a bootlegger.

Grantham was jealous of his daughter (referred to as a "complete Freudian relationship" by his great nephew). It was this jealousy that caused him to have Bedelia's lover Peter Yarbro murdered, later covering up the death as a hunting accident. This proved to be his final mistake, as it drove the already emotionally unstable Bedelia to the point of a nervous breakdown.

After Nathan suffered a stroke, Bedelia was chosen to nurse him full-time. On Father's Day, as her father was demanding his cake and hurtling emotionally abusive remarks at his daughter, Bedelia finally snapped, bashing her father over the head with a marble ashtray and [...] him instantly.

In an ironic twist, Bedelia's niece, Sylvia, covered up the entire incident, making it appear as if Nathan had suffered a fatal fall from his chair.

Seven years passed, and Sylvia, along with her nephew, niece, and her niece's spouse, routinely celebrated the anniversary of Nathan's death, both out of mocking respect to Bedelia and due to the fact that the old man's passing had meant there was no trouble AbOUT the will.

For Bedelia's part, she would visit her father's grave every year on this dubiously happy occasion. It was guilt, rather than love, that drove her to do this, as revealed on the seventh anniversary visit, during which she appeared to still be quite bitter at her father. Notably, she was intoxicated at the time.

Unfortunately for Bedelia, the feeling was mutual. During Bedelia's seventh and final visit, Nathan rose from his grave as a zombie and strangled her to death, demanding his Father's Day cake the entire time.

Meanwhile, Sylvia and the others were awaiting Bedelia's arrival. Sylvia recounted the story of Nathan's demise to Hank, the husband of her niece Cass.

Later that evening, after Bedelia had been absent for an abnormally long time, Hank left to find her, but only succeeding in ensuring his own demise after clumsily falling into a grave and into a trap. Nathan, still skulking about the graveyard, used telekinesis to pull his own headstone onto the frightened Hank, crushing him.

Later still, as Cass began to miss her husband, Sylvia went out to check on him. As she entered the kitchen, she encounterd the corpse of Mrs. Danvers, the family cook. As she turned to flee, Nathan was waiting, and demanded his cake a final time before twisting her neck around 180 degrees, beheading her.

With Sylvia, Hank, and Bedelia all curiously absent, Cass began to worry, and plead with her brother Richard to accompany her out to find them. Richard, uninterested in the matter, initially declined, but was convinced when he saw that his sister was genuinely frightened.

As The Siblings entered the kitchen leading toward the back door, they immediately noticed that the lights were out. They attempted to go through another series of doors, but were cut off by Nathan, who had placed Sylvia's head on a platter with icing and candles. Nathan cheerfully exclaimed that he got his cake, much to the horror of his descendants.
