Florida Association of Student Councils

The Florida Association of Student Councils (F.A.S.C.) is an organization made up of students and their advisors throughout the state of Florida.

The members of the F.A.S.C. are working together in a harmonious effort to bring AbOUT growth in student councils—to make them respected investments of time and energy in education. Student councils are changing. It is the intent of the FASC to aid student councils in their quest for becoming more effective. We are safeguarding the ideas of democracy by developing a sincere regard for law and government in the student leaders of our secondary schools.

History

  • Founded in 1939.
  • Originally under the name of Florida Association of Student Leaders.
    • Began with 21 schools.
    • Now, there are nearly 300 member schools.
  • Original sponsoring organization of the FASC was the Florida Education Association.
    • In 1967, following a state wide teachers strike, high school principals asked the Florida High School Activities Association to assume the sponsorship of both the FASC and the Florida Chapter of the National Honor Society.
  • In 1998, a citizens advisory committee created by the state legislature recommended that the Florida High School Activities Association divest itself of all non-athletic activities. At that point the sponsorship of the FASC (as well as the FCNHS) went to the Florida Association of Secondary Principals.

Philosophy

The FASC is constantly working and organizing to be able to reach our goals. They are:
1. To develop and promote unity of purpose in state student councils.
2. To facilitate the sharing of ideas, news and projects among member schools.
3. To encourage student participation in student council on the school, district an state level.
4. To develop leadership, responsibility, personal growth and the ideas of democracy.
