Ambrosio Viaux

Ambrosio Viaux Aguilar was a Chilean Army general who served as Director General of Carabineros de Chile from May 1930 to August 1931. He was the last Army general to head the institution before its leadership passed to an officer drawn from its own ranks.

Biography

Military and police career

Viaux was an officer of the Chilean Army who attained the rank of brigadier general. He became Director General of Carabineros de Chile in May 1930, succeeding Fernando Sepúlveda Onfray.

At the time, the institution's highest-ranking officers held the rank of colonel, and its general directors were appointed from the Army. A reorganization introduced through Decree with Force of Law No. 3,753 of 21 August 1930 established a new personnel structure, including the positions of director general, deputy director, two inspector colonels and four chief prefect colonels.

During Viaux's administration, Manuel Concha Pedregal served as deputy director general, initially in an acting capacity. Concha was formally confirmed in that position in March 1931.

Departure from office

Viaux resigned on 3 August 1931, shortly after President Carlos Ibáñez del Campo left office. Three days later, Supreme Decree No. 2,703 appointed Concha as his successor.

The appointment marked a change in the institution's leadership: Concha was the first director general selected from the ranks of Carabineros itself, rather than from the Army. The rank of general was subsequently introduced into Carabineros de Chile in April 1932.
