Toni Gilbert

Toni Gilbert, RN, MA, HN (born June 6, 1947) is an artist, author, editor, holistic nurse, and transpersonal counselor known for her work in the healing arts.

Education

She is an alternative professional with a formal education in nursing from Chemeketa Community College. Gilbert received a bachelor's degree in art and psychology, including undergraduate classes in Jungian psychology from Marylhurst University. Gilbert continued her interest in art and its symbolism in a graduate art therapy school and holds a master’s degree in transpersonal studies from the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology.

Artist

In 1976, Lewis Judy and Toni Gilbert began a woodworking and stained glass studio in Oregon and called “Jefferson Wood & Glass.” Gilbert designed the furniture and built stained glass, while Lewis did the woodworking.   Through the years, the designs changed from the late 70’s traditional red oak furniture to more contemporary designs in the 90’s. They built a gallery named “Made in Jefferson”. The Made in Jefferson gallery phase of the business drew local and national attention and was showcased in three Taunton Press books: Design Book Five, The Workbench Book and The Workshop Book, one issue of Fine Woodworking magazine and they made the cover of Better Homes and Gardens. The gallery featured art and woodworking shows and the sales of the business grew quickly. Made in Jefferson was named Oregon’s fastest growing secondary wood products company in 1990. In 1991,they closed the gallery and renamed the business “Northwest Timber”.

Alternative Nursing Practice

Toni Gilbert started her career as a psychiatric nurse working with diverse populations including children, adolescences and adults with chronic mental illness and various disorders of the personality. A workshop in Guided Imagery at the Academy of Guided Imagery impelled her to seek a career in health psychology. Another weekend class by research psychologist Jeanne Achterberg, further cemented Gilbert’s orientation to this path. Later, she found her way to the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (ITP). While working on a master’s of arts degree, she received a certification in Wellness Counseling and Mind Body Consciousness as well as an education in transpersonal studies. Mentored by two transpersonal psychologists, she took courses in religion, psychology, and philosophy. Throughout, she participated in Jungian-type therapy using a multitude of healing modalities and techniques.

After graduation, she took a year-long course called “Imagery in Medicine” with Drs. Achterberg and Lawlis. At the end of the course, Dr. Achterberg asked about Gilbert’s role in nursing and suggested that she look into the American Holistic Nurses Association www.OHNA.org, of which Dr. Achterberg’s friend, Barbie Dossey, was affiliated. In 1998, Gilbert moved into a historic, fully restored, building, which she named the Centre of Main St., to kick start her alternative nursing practice and rent space to other practitioners. Currently, has moved her office to the family home in the countryside. Gilbert is the founding editor of the on-line nursing journal, Alternative Journal of Nursing, by holistic nurses committed to exploring and furthering the evolution of the nursing profession.

Oregon Holistic Nursing Association

The Oregon Holistic Nurses Association (OHNA) was formed by Toni Gilbert, RN, MA, HN-BC in 2007. The American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) initially supported her endeavor and equipped her with a mailing list of Oregon nurses. Two years later, AHNA decided that the growing chapter may become too much for them and the Oregon group spun off to create an independent organization.

The OHNA currently holds healing retreats and conferences yearly at Breitenbush Hot Springs for their growing membership.
