Timeline of the Pirates of the Caribbean films

The following is a timeline concerning the events that occur in the universe of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, revealed either during the films or elsewhere.

Dates

Although the movies are set somewhere in the 18th century, neither a historical event that occurred nor an exact date was given in any of the movies, so by now it is impossible to connect this timeline with the real-life chronology. There are however, some hints that allow a rough estimation:

  • The fact that Rule Britannia was played in a scene in The Curse of the Black Pearl allows the movie's events to be dated after 1740.
  • The Union Flag was first used in 1707.
  • In one of the prequel books AbOUT Sparrow's adventures as a teenager, he visits New Orleans which was founded in 1718. Jack also boasts that he helped Benjamin Franklin in his experiments with electricity in 1752.
  • Hernan Cortés conquered the Aztecs in the early 16th century.
  • The silver badges worn by the soldiers have a GR (Georgius Rex) monogram and the Letter of Marque is signed by King George, but in both cases no number was added, so it is not clear which King George it is. This could imply George I ( 1714-1727 ) since British monarchs are not called the first until there has been a second (e.g., Queen Elizabeth I was just Elizabeth until the current Queen Elizabeth II became queen).
  • The Royal Navy and Royal Marines uniforms match late 18th century standards, but the civilian dress is more typical for the later 17th/earlier 18th century.
  • The ship's armament and rigging is mostly typical for the 1770s, but some parts are from the 1740s. However, both the Interceptor and the Edinburgh Trader were played by late 18th century ship replicas and the Dauntless is based on HMS Victory, a ship built in the late 18th century (1765).
  • A sign on a building in Port Royal shows the date 1704 - obviously the year the inn opened.
  • Port Royal was mostly destroyed by an earthquake in 1692. A new city was built and subsequently became a major British naval base.
  • The map of the world which can be seen at times in the movie includes Australia, which was not fully mapped until at least 1770.
  • The documentaries on the DVD state that the handguns are dated about 1765, which is the same as the classic Disney film Treasure Island.
  • According to a documentary on the DVD, the captain killed by Mercer in Dead Man's Chest is the father of Jim Hawkins, the protagonist in Treasure Island. This novel is set in the late 1740s, when Jim is 12 years old.
  • Ragetti refers to the Kraken as cephalopod, the term first introduced by Carolus Linnaeus in the first edition of his Systema Naturae published in 1735.

Further, it should be noticed that the British Empire adopted the Gregorian calendar only in 1752, so all prior dates would be given in the Old Style.
