Thredup
Thredup is a national online-hosted clothing swap in the United States, combining features similar to Netflix, StubHub and eBay, allowing users to exchange old clothing for new. It was founded by James Reinhart, Oliver Lubin, and Chris Homer. The company is advised by Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. The company summarizes the service as "peer-to-peer clothing exchange executed through the mail".
Operation
Registered members can establish preferences and create an online "wardrobe" listing the clothing they no longer wear. Members then purchase pre-paid envelopes. The site then matches a member's list to other members who are interested, and provides the interested member's contact information. The site incorporates ratings and feedback from participants, and matches them accordingly. ThredUp members consistently sending out items in good condition will be matched with like members, while members sending clothes in poor condition are first warned, and on the second notified offense are de-registered from the site.
As of October 2009, the company claimed 4,800 registered users, and the service was set up only to handle shirts, though the company says this will be expanded in the near future.
