The company was founded in 2002 by Kevin Schaff. Schaff is a graduate of the University of Wyoming and currently serves as CEO.

The company has headquarters in Denver, a digital refinery in Laramie, WY and offices in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Indianapolis and Tokyo. Thought Equity Motion's Web site offers production professionals access, information and support pertaining to research, license and clearance of film and HD content for creative productions.

The company has formed content partnerships with film and entertainment companies such as National Geographic, Sony Pictures Entertainment, HBO Archives, the NCAA and Warren Miller Entertainment. This motion content is available for search, PREview, licensing and download through Thought Equity Motion's web site.

NBC News selected Thought Equity Motion to convert and distribute their archive of news footage. The deal was announced on July 10, 2007.

On August 7, 2007, it was announced that Thought Equity Motion had acquired the Australian firm FilmWorld.
