Background and conception
Initially, 50 Cent planned to release Black Magic as his fifth studio album. Black Magic saw 50 Cent pulling in a number of different genres and influences - most notably dance and pop music. However 50 Cent later decided scrapped the Black Magic album and considered a new direction for his fifth studio album; 50 Cent was in favor of a more traditional hip-hop album. According to a source the album is expected to be released near Thanksgiving 2011.
Recording
50 Cent's Black Magic album had a planned number of genres and influences - most notably dance and rock music. The reason behind the decision to scrap the Black Magic project was the recordings 50 Cent was producing while he arrived back in America from tour in 2010. 50 Cent claimed that the new recordings he produced did not fit the concept of Black Magic. "Since I've made it back to America, after recording in the UK and different territories while I was on the road, I started writing material that don't quite fit that concept, that album".
On his Twitter and Facebook accounts 50 Cent announced that he had worked with Eminem on four possible songs for the album, two of which he said had "potential to be a single" and that he would use the best one's for the album.
On July 27th, a song entitled "I'm On It" leaked onto the internet. The song is produced by The Cataracs and is rumored to be on the album.
Release
Initially, 50 Cent announced that the release of the album would be delayed until 2012 due to disagreements with Interscope Records: In a series of tweets, 50 Cent explained that Interscope Records were disputing with him over how the album should be released, and claimed he would delay the album's release until the dispute was resolved. However, 50 Cent later announced that the album would be in fact be released in November 2011: currently, he plans to release the album in conjunction with his headphone line Sleek by 50.
After the song I'm On It, produced by The Cataracs, leaked on July 27, 2011, 50 Cent blamed Interscope Records for the leakage, and, as he had intended to release the song as the album's next single, retaliated against the label by briefly cancelling the album, also threatening to leak the third single from Detox, The Psycho, in which he is featured. However, he later retracted these statements, and apologized to Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, head of Interscope Records.
Singles
The album's first promotional single, "Outlaw", was leaked to the internet on 16 June, 2011, after being premiered by Funkmaster Flex on the New York City radio station Hot 97. After receiving airplay on urban contemporary radio stations, the song peaked at number ninety-nine on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for the week ending July 23, 2011.
