Susan Samueli
Susan Samueli was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley . She received a B.A. in Mathematics from UC Berkeley in 1972. From 1972 to 1985 she was with IBM Corporation, as a software programmer in the Federal Systems Division and as a Systems Engineer in the National Marketing Division. In 1985 she left IBM to focus her energy on raising her children, at which time she developed a keen interest in alternative health care. She developed an ACTIVE consulting practice in the areas of nutrition, homeopathy, and Chinese herbs and subsequently received a Ph.D. in nutrition from the American Holistic College of Nutrition in 1993 and a Diploma in Homeopathy from the British Institute of Homeopathy in 1994.
Susan and her husband, Dr. Henry Samueli, relocated to Orange County in 1995. She is Executive Director of the Samueli Foundation, which she co-founded with her husband. The Foundation makes grants to agencies working in the areas of health, social services, religion, education and the arts, and was lead funder in the creation of the new Samueli Jewish Campus in Irvine . Susan serves on the boards of the Orangewood Children’s Foundation and Opera Pacific, and chairs the Orangewood Children’s Foundation Auxiliary, 44 Women For Children. She also serves on the Board and Advisory Board of the Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine (SSCIM) at UC Irvine. SSCIM promotes integrative medicine by providing education, scientific research and a model of clinical care that emphasizes healing of the whole person.
In the fall of 2005 Susan helped to co-found the Coalition Advocating Human Security (CAHS), also at UCI, to study threats to human security and identify strategies to protect and empower the most vulnerable individuals and communities in our world. She was honored with the UCI Medal in March 2000 and she was the 2002 Ellen Cooperman Angel Award Recipient given by the John Wayne Cancer Institute.
Anaheim Ducks
In June 2005 Henry and Susan bought the NHL's Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, now called the Anaheim Ducks, from the Walt Disney Company for $75 million. The Samueli’s also owns the company that operates the city-owned Honda Center, the home of the Ducks. The Anaheim Ducks are now worth a reported value of $197 million.[3]
Under the ownership of Henry and his wife Susan, the Anaheim Ducks won the 2007 Stanley Cup championship.
