Southern Cross (metal band)

Southern Cross is a canadian prog/power metal band from Quebec.

Biography

Southern Cross' story begins back in winter 2000 in Canada, when Jeff and Dave met at Université Laval in Quebec City. Being both musicians they started to play together. Rapidly, the idea of forming a power metal tribute band formed. Fred joined them a few weeks later and the trio praticed for a few months while trying many musicians to complete the lineup. During this time they decided to write a few compositions of their own in order to be a part of a local contest back in winter 2002 where they won the public prize.

Then the tribute project was over and the band decided to concentrate on writing their own stuff, much more thrash and prog metal oriented. A few months later the lineup was finally completed by Oli and JB. A couple of demos were recorded and many gigs were done in 2003, while opening for Edguy in Montreal in 2004 and Sonata Arctica in Quebec City in 2005. The first album, Rise Above, was produced independently by the band in 2005 at Unika Studios. This production resulted in a power/thrash metal album with a lot of progressive influences, very well received by the critics. An early 2006 release was followed by big concerts including opening for Yngwie Malmsteen and Stratovarius.

The band joined the Thundering Records roster in January 2007 and then began working on material for the next album. They recently announced the end of the preproduction of their second album which is going to be recorded this year and released at the beginning or 2008.
