Shiyuan Liu
Shiyuan Liu (Chinese language: 刘诗园, Shiyuan Liu is an artist, based between Beijing and Copenhagen. She was born in Beijing, China in 1985.
Background
Shiyuan Liu is now based between Beijing and Copenhagen. She was born in Beijing, China in 1985, has taken a MFA degree in Photography, Video and Related Media from New York School of Visual Arts, and a Bachelor degree from Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. She has had her solo exhibitions at Andersen´s Contemporary in Copenhagen, White Space Beijing in Beijing, a solo with Asian Contemporary Art Consortium in San Francisco, and a solo exhibition at Artissima, Present Future in Italy. Her works have been presented at He Xiang Ning Art Museum curated by Feng Boyi, the 7th Shenzhen Sculpture Biennale, and in Guggenheim Foundation program in New York. She was rewarded the Paula Rhodes memorial award, Honorary AIR Awards at Kala Art Institute, and was invited by Carol Yinghua Lu to spend three months at the OCAT International Artist Residency in Shenzhen.
After she graduated from high school of central academy of fine arts, she stopped painting, and started working with photography and video. In 2009, she formed a performance group. In recent years, Shiyuan Liu has been focusing on the beauty and values of sentiment. She is intrigued by the various ways viewers might view her artwork, and how each of them makes conceptual and psychological connections to images based on our own experiences. Her art practice has progressed from setting borderlines technically, and into expressing the concept of borderlines symbolically, through her understandings of imagery and how a succession of associations and connections unfolds. In a larger perspective, the works also speak of the comical and often misunderstood relationship between man-made technology and real life phenomena. Working with deadpan aesthetics, she choose camera angle by selecting the most simple and neutral stance, she seek to provide a platform where our relationship to the subject being portrayed is direct, so that as we look at them, they look back at us. They are the encounters between physical reality and the creative mind of human, as a middle ground on which the two formative powers, man and world, meet as equal antagonists and partners.
