SABBATICAL GOAT
is a extreme metal cult outfit from Holland. Formed in 1996 as a Black/Trash metal band the group underwent some changes in the line up as well as their musical direction before finally settling on their current post-punk sound. The band retains its underground notoriety for its on- and offstage shenanigans and non-commercial attitude towards the music industry.
Formed in 1996 by Maurits de Rooij, Valium, Sater, Ronald 'Xisharh' and Troll, the band set out to quickly gain a dedicated following in the local music scene as result of their first, selftitled demo. Extensive touring followed throughout the Benelux countries, which caused the band to become more solid in their sound and songwriting, which in term led to the recording of their notorious second demo entitled "Satans Gebroed", Dutch native tongue for 'Satans Spawn'. On this demo the songwriting was more advanced in arrangements and songs got more length to develope onto the listener. This propelled the band to spearhead the Black Metal scene in Holland. The evolution in style caused the band to re-record the fan favorite " The Trees of Darkness". More performing followed, including the now legendary fire-show in The Cameleon in Bussum.
The band continued to write material that should have become their breakthrough full length entitled "The Black Moon of Geburah". The new material had more emphasis on atmosphere combining complex rythms with chord progression. Different opinions about the groups philosophy caused Maurits and Troll to resign after recording finished. Losing 2 founding members had the remaining 3 members lost and searching for replacements, but unsuccesfully in their quandry they decided to break up. The recorded material surfaced in illegal, unmastered demo versions (as seen below) but never as the complete album it should have been. Members got into serious legal trouble as result of drug abuse caused by the dissatisfying band situation.
In 2000 Sabbatical Goat was resurrected by the original members minus bassplayer, but Maurits left discouraged of the bandmembers substance abuse after only one rehearsal. Soon after Valium was cast out as his cocain addiction and alcoholism started interfering with his accomplishments on drums. After long searching the group found a new percussionist in Thijs VA, a fast death metal drummer famous for his 'hard hitting'. As new vocalist Leon G. was attrackted. His influence coming from a long crust-punk background including the infamous band Collapse, along with the bands growing general interest in more heavy, riff orientated music saw the band develope a more Death metal like sound. They again toured in Holland and Germany, (British dates got cancelled) and recorded their live album "Zombie Feast" on Friday 13th october 2000 in Rotterdam. Longtime fans were shocked by the change in sound and image, yet people unaware of the history of the group were blown away by the brutality displayed onstage.
This touring cycle earned SG a lot of new fans.
With the new vocalist, the group started work on a new full-length in 2001. Production got slowed down heavily by substance abuse and financial problems by some members. This created serious turmoil within the band leading to numerous fights. Gruelling production schedules and inner disturbance saw the new full length to be finished after more than a year of hard work and set backs. The end result was the issue of much debate as it didnt live up to some of the members expectations because of the clean production and many effects used. Dennis R. was attracted as new bassplayer and rerecorded the basslines. The band took some time off to restore relations after which they started touring again. However, drugs and alcohol always lingered around the 'Goats'. Leon, sickened by his bandmates behaviour and musical course, quit end 2003. The allready unstable team went into a more ambient direction resulting in recordings under different names (Nimmernacht). The band claimed this 'New-Age'sound to be the natural developement of their sound but gained bad critical acclaim worldwide. Experimenting with synthetics, jazz chords and RnB arrangements SG slipped into a slumbering state.
It was with the entering of Valium in 2006 that the soft priod was ended. The band decided to proceed in the heavier vein of their post-comback recorded material, by now called 'The Failed Tapes' due to the fact that it was their 2nd full length to be never released. Valium took on vocal duties and the band started rehearsing again in a more serious manner. In 2008 some live performances were done including a gig at the now defunct cult studio "JONOS" and a gig at the Tsunami Festival in Hilversum. Some recordings were done at the Jonos which gave the band the positive feedback .
The band still retains its DIY mentality, releasing everything by itself and having released only 1 tshirt, gaining lots of respect and a great following throughout the underground.
