Rett Varner

Joseph Rett Varner (born February 3, 1988 in Bedford, Texas) is a professional baseball pitcher for the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball.

Prior to playing professionally, he attended Northwest High School in Justin, Texas, the University of Texas at Arlington, and Brigham Young University. He was originally drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 34th round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft, but he did not sign. He was then taken by the Miami Marlins in the sixth round of the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft and he did sign. The scout who signed him was Steve Taylor.

In his first professional season, 2010, he was 4-1 with a 1.97 ERA in 12 games (10 starts) split between the GCL Marlins and Jamestown Jammers. In 2011, he was 8-8 with a 5.29 ERA for the Greensboro Grasshoppers. He split 2012 between the Jupiter Hammerheads and the Jacksonville Suns. He was a reliever for most of 2013 and posted a 3.21 ERA in 40 appearances (seven starts) for the Suns and Triple-A New Orleans Zephyrs.
