Phallus Über Alles
Phallus Über Alles (abbreviated PÜA) is a digital hardcore band from Bloomington, Indiana. The group combines layered female shouts, distorted beats, and punk guitars with feminist and anarcho-political lyrical themes.
Members / History
Phallus Über Alles began in 2000 as a solo project for Diesel Sam, who was a founding member of the noise band Slave Cylinder along with bandmate Remy Brecht. Previously, the group had been using their ventures into the digital hardcore sound as encores for their live performances, with Diesel screaming improvised rants over the music. After relocating to Las Vegas in 2001, Diesel began to refine these pieces into finished songs. Live shows during this period include a performance at the Avant Garden festival and a set at punk venue The Cooler Lounge.
After moving to New Hampshire in 2003, the band recorded a four-song demo and sent it to labels. Atari Teenage Riot member Hanin Elias expressed interest in signing the project to Fatal Recordings, and the Iron Woman album was released worldwide in November 2004. This same year, Phallus Über Alles performed at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival (abbreviated DEMF, now the Movement Festival) along with such acts as Cdatakill, Iszoloscope, Larvae, and Xanopticon.
The next year, PÜA moved to Detroit and began to play shows regularly in and around the area, including such events as the Alec Empire-endorsed Digital Hardcore Festival in Toronto and the Industrial Movement II festival at St. Andrews Hall in Detroit alongside such bands as DJ? Acucrack, The Final Cut, and Meat Beat Manifesto. They released a new EP, Les Femmes de la Guerre, on D-Trash Records in 2007.
As of 2009, the band is completing work on a five-piece series of EPs collectively titled "Five Fingers Make a Fist" and tracks for their sophomore album, which is tentatively titled "Le Femme Terrible."
