Peter Kehinde Asu

Peter Kehinde Asu (20 May 1942 - 22 June 2019) was the first chartered accountant from Erinmope, Moba Local Government area of Ekiti in Nigeria and the Aare Akorewolu of Erinmope, Ekiti. He was a philanthropist and influenced over 40 sons and daughters from Erinmope village in Ekiti in becoming Chartered Accountants. He audited numerous multinationals in Nigeria such as LAFARGE, FIRST BANK PLC, BERGER PAINTS, JULIUS BERGER , SUNFLAG , ECO BANK PLC and so on. Although a very private person, He is a member of ICAN and ANAN and also qualified as a chartered accountant in 1972 under the auspices of Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (Acca), United Kingdom.
Early life and education
He benefitted from Chief Obafemi Awolowo's free school education and attended Saint John's Anglican school, Erinmope - Ekiti after which he proceeded to Obasola Memorial Modern school in Ushi - Ekiti in 1961 and then Ekiti Parapo College whwre he graduated in grade 2 with distinction in mathematics and physics in the West African Examinatiom Council W.A.E.C exams, 1966.
In 1967, he left Ekiti for Lagos in a job hunt. He was later employed by MESSRS. PEAT MARWICK CASSLETON ELLIOT & CO. which later turned to KPMG NIGERIA as a trainee accountant.
Professionally, Chief Peter Kehinde Asu is a chatered accountant.
Personal life
At the time, Chief Peter Kehinde Asu was employed by Messrs Peat Marwick Cassleton Elliot & Co, he had two other offers i.e. admission at College of Education, University of Lagos and employment with the Post & Telegrams Training Department of Ministry of Communications at Oshodi. He was confused about which one to choose. He contacted his former Physics Teacher at Secondary School, now Prof L.B. Kolawole who told him he didn't know anything about accountancy. Prof Kolawole requested him to find out more about the course and discuss further with him. He later told Prof Kolawole after enquiry that if he could work hard, within 5 years, he would be a qualified chartered accountant earning £1,000 per annum.
When his teacher heard this, he advised him thus: "Unless you have special interest in teaching, the course you are doing is superior to any advanced teachers' college. Make the sky your limit. Anywhere you are, appear as if you do no know what was happening. Always understudy the environment." He studied for the professional examinations of Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) of United Kingdom, qualifying in December 1972 without failing in any of the sections of the examinations.
After qualifying as a chartered accountant, he was employed as a senior staff in the office where he trained with effect for January 1973. He worked very hard throughout the period he was with the company, responsible for the audit of several companies all over Nigeria among which were Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Berger Paints of Nig Plc, Nigeria Breweries Plc, First Bank Plc, John Holt Plc, International Merchant Bank Nig Ltd, Eko International Bank now Polaris Bank Plc, Nigeria Agip Oil Co Ltd, Costain Plc etc.
He was promoted to the positions of Assistant Audit Manager in 1977, Deputy Manager in 1978, Full Manager in 1979 and Group Manager in 1980 till he became a Partner in the leading audit firm of Chartered Accountants in Nigeria in January 1981. He worked in the firm throughout his working life from 1967 till 2004 when he retired as a Senior Partner.
Chief Peter Kehinde Asu was a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (FCA) and of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA).
He was the first Chartered Accountant to be produced in his home town, Erinmope-Ekiti and as at today, there are more than 60 Chartered Accountants in the town among which are five (5) of his children.
He was married to Chief (Mrs) Felicia Titilola Asu and Mrs Margaret Itunu Asu and blessed with 6 sons and 4 daughters.
During this working period, he travelled to several countries such as Germany, United Kingdom, France, United States of America, Italy, Australia among others.
As a result of his great assistance of employment to the youths of his community, he was honoured with the chieftaincy title of Aare Akorewolu of Erinmope Ekiti by His Royal Majesty, Oba J. O. Aina, the Obaleo of Erinmope-Ekiti in November 1991.
