Peaceful Rest Valley

Map of Peaceful Rest Valley for the Super NES video game EarthBound.

is a fictional valley used in the Super Nintendo Entertainment System video game EarthBound.

Summary

In the Japanese version, this fictional valley is known as Grateful Dead Valley. However, the name of the valley was changed for the North American and European versions because the phrase "Grateful Dead" was copyrighted by the real-life 1960s rock band of the same name. Nintendo wanted to evade a possible lawsuit because of the strict copyright laws in North America as opposed to Japan.

The valley is the only possible way to travel between Twoson and Happy Happy Village. The entire road is a giant maze that contains a cave at the end of the maze that leads to Happy Happy Village. A shack can be seen from a cliff, owned by Everdred, where Ness rescued Paula from her jail cell. A pencil-like statue once blocked the only passage to Happy Happy Village while all the bridges were destroyed (except for one which connects directly to the cave). Ness would bring a strange object created by the Apple Kid to destroy the statue. After Mr. Carpainter's cult was defeated, the bridges were repaired.

There is also a purple river that is distinctive of this valley.
