OpenSER is a flexible server application, based on the SIP-protocol (RFC 3261). One important usage scenario is to build switching centers for VoIP-telephony systems. OpenSER is free software and is licenced under the GNU General Public License. The main goal of the project is to build a robust and scalable SIP-server. OpenSER is used in the voice-over-IP field as SIP-proxy, registrar, as location- or application server or as gateway to instant-messaging services like SMS or Jabber.

OpenSER can be used in small systems, for example in embedded systems like DSL-router, but also for large installations with several millions of customers for internet service provider Internet Service Provider. The software is mainly distributed as source code, but some vendors like Cisco also sell hardware that contains an embedded OpenSER.

The OpenSER-project was created on the 14th june 2005 from two SER core-developer Bogdan-Andrei Iancu and Daniel-Constantin Mierla together with the SER-contributor Elena-Ramona Modroiu. OpenSER is mostly written in the programming language C and works on Unix- and Linux-systems. New functionality can be embedded with the help of a module-interface.

On 28 July, 2008 the OpenSER-project was renamed to Kamailio because of some trademark issues. Shortly after that the OpenSIPS project forked because of a conflict between the core-developers. Development and maintenance of the software is now done from two separate development teams, each of them with different priorities and agendas. In November 2008 the Kamailio developers announced to team up with the SER developers to form the sip-router project.
