Druid OSE

Druid is an Open source Unified Communications Platform that brings together IP PBX, IM, faxing and collaboration functionality. The Druid functionality is based on open source projects as Asterisk, Dojo Toolkit, HylaFAX, Jabberd 2 and Dovecot. Those packages offer the IP-PBX, fax, instant messaging and Voicemail functions, respectively.

History

Druid was created in 2005 as an Asterisk based GUI and have since evolved into a full Asterisk based distribution for Unified Communications. Druid is maintained by Voiceroute, an Open Source IP communications company based in Norwalk CT and Singapore. Druid was released public for first time in March 2008.

From then until now the Druid Open Source Unified Communications distro has grown in popularity with over thousands of downloads and awards at OSCON 2008 and Linuxworld 2008

Software

Auto-provisioning for IP phone

Druid was the first in the industry to have full auto-provisioning that does not require entering of mac addresses. Druid has full auto-provisioning support for plug & play IP telephony: Polycom, Grandstream, Aastra, Linksys, Snom, Cisco and Mitel.

External application integration

Druid was is the only IP telephony distribution to have a proper SOAP API where developers can create third party Unified Communications applications for mobile phones, desktop etc. Druid SOAP API is also used to integrate with other applications like Zimbra, SugarCRM and Microsoft Exchange.

UC 2.0

UC 2.0 is rooted in the belief that your web browser is the new "desktop platform". UC 2.0 allows people to interact and use communications (VOIP & unified messaging) right out of your web browser. Druid has leveraged Mozilla Ubiquity to create the a new way for people to interact their communications from Firefox web browser by using verbs, textual commands that reflect what the user wants to do communications wise. Examples of integration include: Druid with SugarCRM turns your Firefox browser into a powerful UC application that allows users to dial numbers, send faxes, set presence, and many other cool applications. Other related projects are Mozilla Snowl

Hardware

Druid has auto-detection and auto-configuration of zaptel telephony hardware. It includes drivers for the major manufacturers like Digium, Sangoma, Rhino Equipment, Redfone and Xorcom. Most of these drivers are supported through the zaptel project or modified versions of it. Other drivers are supported by the mISDN project.
