Nearpod

Nearpod is an educational technology platform that enables teachers to create, deliver, and assess interactive lessons. The platform is designed for use in K–12 education and supports teacher-led instruction, student participation, formative assessment, and real-time feedback.

Nearpod was founded in 2012 by Guido Kovalskys, Felipe Sommer, and Emiliano Abramzon. The company initially developed a mobile platform intended to support interactive classroom instruction.

In February 2021, Renaissance announced an agreement to acquire Nearpod. The acquisition brought Nearpod's teacher-facilitated instructional delivery capabilities together with Renaissance's assessment and personalized learning technologies.

History

Nearpod was launched in 2012 as a mobile-based instructional platform. The company was founded by Guido Kovalskys, Felipe Sommer, and Emiliano Abramzon, who developed the platform to facilitate interactive learning experiences between teachers and students.

In March 2017, Nearpod announced a $21 million funding round led by Insight Venture Partners. The company stated that the investment would support product development, expansion of its team, creation of interactive educational content, and growth within the K–12 education market.

Over time, Nearpod expanded its platform beyond mobile presentation tools to include interactive instructional activities, formative assessment features, multimedia content, and tools for monitoring student responses during lessons.

In 2021, Renaissance acquired Nearpod. Renaissance described the acquisition as part of an effort to combine live instructional delivery and real-time classroom insights with personalized practice and assessment.

Platform

Nearpod allows educators to create or adapt digital lessons and deliver them to students through connected devices. Lessons can incorporate multimedia content and interactive activities designed to collect student responses and provide teachers with information about student understanding.

The platform supports both live, teacher-paced instruction and student-paced learning. Teachers can use interactive activities to gather formative assessment data during a lesson and review student responses.

Nearpod also provides a library of pre-made educational resources. According to the company, its platform includes more than 22,000 lessons, videos, and activities.

Educational content

Nearpod's content is primarily designed for K–12 education and covers a range of academic subjects and instructional topics. The platform includes interactive lessons, videos, activities, and assessment-oriented resources.

The company has also developed content and features intended to support different instructional contexts, including classroom instruction, distance learning, and blended learning.

Acquisition by Renaissance

In February 2021, Renaissance announced its agreement to acquire Nearpod. Renaissance characterized Nearpod as a provider of teacher-facilitated instructional delivery and stated that the combination would expand its ability to provide educators with real-time instructional insights alongside personalized practice and assessment.

Renaissance subsequently incorporated Nearpod into its broader portfolio of educational technology products. Renaissance currently identifies Nearpod as part of its product suite and describes it as a collaborative instructional platform.

Reach

Nearpod states that its platform is used by teachers in more than 150 countries and that its products reach teachers in approximately 75% of U.S. school districts. The company also reports having a library of more than 22,000 lessons, videos, and activities.
