Miss Black California USA Pageant
The Miss Black California USA Scholarship Pageant is licensed to The S.H.A.W. Foundation through the national Miss Black USA Scholarship Pageant and founded in 1986 by Karen Arrington. The Miss Black California USA state pageant is a major source of scholarship funds for African American women living in the state of California. The national pageant was established as a spin off to the Miss Black America Pageant which was created in 1968 and no longer exists, and has become an institution in the African American community affording young women with a national stage to display their talent, beauty, and intellect and win scholarship opportunities. The S.H.A.W. Foundation independently produces the state pageant which will afford young women who are pursuing higher education, the opportunity to compete at the national Miss Black USA pageant and, over eighty percent of the delegates were pursuing graduate or professional degrees. The winner was a 1st year medical student at Meharry Medical College. The pageant prides itself on celebrating the achievements of young African American women who are often not showcased in the mainstream media. .

California State Pageant
Each year, the state competition will be held in California. Ther are also other state pageants in "Arizona1", Colorado, Florida, "Georgia2", "Iowa3", The Miss Black USA organization licenses out state pageants. In the case where a state pageant is not held, a delegate may apply as a delegate-at-large.
