Michael Kang (activist)
Michael Kang (born 1991) is a social justice activist who was born in Korea, but resides in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. At the age of fifteen, drawing inspiration from Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., and Gandhi, Kang founded Generation Against Global Injustice (GAGI), an organization dedicated to spreading awareness of global poverty and modern-day slavery by mobilizing and informing people through creative events and projects.
According to Kang, the impetus behind the creation of GAGI was the viewing of a documentary:
I was introduced to the issue of child soldiers in Uganda through the documentary Invisible Children. I was 15 at the time and was shocked by the atrocities in Uganda and many other third world countries. I knew I had to do something. So I held a screening of the documentary at my middle school, and realized afterwards that I wanted to continue engaging in dialogue AbOUT global poverty and slavery with other teenagers."
Kang has attracted hundreds of people to his events, which have helped provide funds for Invisible Children, Tusubira, and Just One.
