K.K.Luthra International Criminal Moot Court Competition, Delhi
“K.K.Luthra International Moot Court Competition” is a tier 4 Moot Competition held at Faculty of Law Delhi University . It is the only international Criminal Moot Court competition held in India.
Origin
The Competition has focused on topical legal issues and subjects ranging from medical negligence, information technology and cybercrime, unlawful act ivities and [...], online banking fraud, International Criminal Law and [...], impeachmen t of Judges of the International Criminal Court, Narcotics, Trial by Media and Defence Entrapment an d related issues in criminal jurisprudence. The patron of the Moot include Mr. Siddarth Luthra, former Additional Solicitor General of India and Geeta Luthra, a well know Supreme Court lawyer who specializes in Women’s rights. The competition is held in the 3 rd week of January at Campus Law Centre, Delhi Unvi ersity every year and includes Workshops by international speakers and is adjudica ted by Supreme Court Lawyers and judges. The finals are held the prestigious Indian Habitat Cent re near Khan Marketin Delhi. In 2005, over 16 top institutions from all over India participated i n the inaugural edition of the Competition. In 2009 the competition became international and saw participat ion from 42 institutions. In 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014, 42, 46, 62, 60 and 55 (total 74 Indian an d Overseas Universities registered) Indian and Overseas Universities participated respectively.
K.K.Luthra
Mr. K.K. Luthra, Sr. Advocate was born in April 192 5 in Khanewal (West Punjab) now in Pakistan . In 1941, Mr. K.K. Luthra joined Forman Christian College, a renowned Institution of Lahore, wh ere he obtained his F.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees. Thereafter , he joined Government Law College, Lahore, one of the premier institutions of law at that time. While he was studying law, his family, which was based in West Punjab (now in Pakistan), had to migrate as re fugees to Shimla, by reason of the partition of the country, where he completed his law degree in 1949 from the Government Law College, Punjab. He was enrolled as a Pleader of the Punjab Hi gh Court in 1949 and later as an Advocate in 1954. As he was the only child of his parents who h ad lost every thing during the partition, his fathe r urged him to leave the practice of law, which was a tough profession in a new part of the country, and to join the civil services instead. At the insistence of his father he took the civil s ervices examinations, which he cleared while immers ed in the practice of law. However, he picked up s ufficient number of briefs before the interview rou nd and began to support the family. This convinced his father to let him follow his professional wish to practice as a lawyer. He started his legal practice at Shimla, and later shifted to Delhi in 1950 where he continued to practice till his demise in 1997. Although he began his career by practicing in the area of civil law, later however he earned a reputation for himself in the f ield of criminal law. During his career spannin g 49 years at the bar from 1949 to 1997, he regularly ap peared in various High Courts as well as the Supreme Court of India in a variety of matters. However his name was always heard in the context o f criminal law, which was his forte. From the early 1 970s he was engaged in almost all prominent crimina l cases in Delhi and often had to travel to various H igh Courts all over India. He was designated as a S enior Advocate of the Delhi High Court in 1984. During his long innings at the Bar, he was lead def ence counsel in numerous important cases like the Baroda Dynamite Case, the L.N. Mishra [...] case, Classik Computers Case, St. Kitts Case, the Coomar Narain Espionage Case & in the post-Emergency Shah Commission of Enquiry. During the period of the Emergency (1975–77) he valiantly advised and appear ed for various prominent political and social figures who were detained under Maintenance of In ternal Security Act
