Makrand Dubey

Pandit Govind Makrand Dubey (born 1946, Vangaon, Damoh district, Madhya Pradesh, India) is an Indian legal Author, advocate, journalist, poet, and Sanskrit scholar. He is known for authoring multiple editions of the Essential Commodities Manual — one of the most widely referenced legal manuals on the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 in Central India — and for his Hindi verse translations of classical Sanskrit scriptures, including the Bhagavad Gita, Bhagavata Purana, and Valmiki Ramayana.

Early Life and Education

Govind Makrand Dubey was born in 1946 in Vangaon, a village in Damoh district, Madhya Pradesh, into a deeply religious family, which gave him early exposure to the study of religious scriptures from childhood.

During his school years, he passed the Gita-Ramayana examinations and received the Sanskrit Kovid certification. During his B.Sc. studies, he published his first poetry collection, titled Os aur Aansu (Dew and Tears).

He subsequently pursued higher education and obtained a law degree (LLB) as well as a postgraduate diploma in Journalism, reflecting his twin interests in legal scholarship and literary expression.

Journalism Career

Alongside his studies and early career, Dubey actively contributed to Hindi journalism and poetry. He wrote for several publications, including:

• Newspapers: Narmada Jyoti, Sar-Samachar, Nai Duniya, and Navbharat

His writing spanned literary, cultural, and public interest topics, establishing him as a respected voice in Hindi journalism in Madhya Pradesh.

Government Service

Dubey served in government service for a significant period, contributing to various development projects in Madhya Pradesh. During this time, he served as the President of the Aapurti Adhikari Sangh (Supply Officers Association), reflecting his organizational leadership alongside his administrative responsibilities.

Legal Career as Advocate

After retiring from government service, Dubey practised as an advocate for 15 years. During this period, he channelled his legal expertise into authoring the Essential Commodities Manual, a comprehensive reference on the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, covering allied rules, control orders, and judicial pronouncements of the Supreme Court and High Courts.

He published 13 editions of this manual:

• 9 editions for Madhya Pradesh
• 4 editions for Chhattisgarh (after the state's formation in 2000)

All editions are published by Khetrapal Law Agency and are widely used by advocates, judicial officers, enforcement authorities, and administrators across both states.

Sanskrit Scripture Translations

The passing of his wife during the COVID-19 pandemic became a profound turning point, drawing Dubey towards spirituality and Sanskrit literature. Inspired and encouraged by his younger brother, Shri Gopal Prasad Dube, he undertook the translation of the Bhagavad Gita into Hindi verse (*chhands*), completing what became the Hindi Geeta.

Inspired by the popularity of the Hindi Geeta, he next translated the joyful leelas of Rasraj Shri Krishna from the Bhagavata Purana into 4,567 chhands, published as the Hindi Bhagavat''. He has also undertaken the translation of the Valmiki Ramayana's 24,000 shlokas into Hindi verse as theHindi Ramayana'', with Shri Gopal Prasad Dube serving as his primary source of inspiration and support throughout.

His translations preserve the essence of the original Sanskrit shlokas while incorporating poetic beauty in Hindi. All translations are freely available as downloadable PDFs on his official website, published under Pathey Prakashan. He has also recorded recitations of all 18 chapters of the Hindi Geeta on his YouTube channel (Hindi Geeta by Makrand Dubey).
