IMsL is an independent contest in that there is no contract or formal connection with feeder contests. To compete, IMsL contestants must possess female ID or identify as female and be at least 21 years of age.

Starting in 1999, another contest, the International Ms Bootblack Competition, arose around the IMsL contest.
