I Support Learning is a technology-based curriculum producer, based in Olathe, Kansas.
History
The company was established in 2003, created by Steve Waddell, and Nikki Martin. Starting out in his basement, he began developing "software that would model the real world and bring it into the classroom." In November 2006, the company moved out of Waddell's basement and into their current office building, located in Olathe, KS.
Product
I Support Learning CREATES curricula using a first person story format. The curricula establish a foundation in programming while still teaching the fundamental classic subjects of math, science and reading. I Support Learning's curricula are in hundreds of schools and are used by thousands of students across the United States. They are the only company of their kind to have an existing articulation agreement with the California State University-L.A. They also have an agreement stating that according the UC system high school students in the state of California can take Video Game Design produced by I Support Learning in lieu of a math class and still graduate.
Early Adoption
In the state of Florida The Independent School Districts of Broward, Miami-Dade and Orange have district-wide adoptions of I Support Learning curricula. Also in Orange County ISD I Support Learning curricula is used as model curricula for reading intervention courses. There is documented information stating over a period of three years, ranging from 2006-2009, math and reading scores of students enrolled in the Video Game Design course offered at Edgewater High School have maintained or raised their scores on the FCAT (Florida's Comprehensive Assessment Test). The scores were at a greater percentage than those who are in the traditional courses offered at the school.
I Support Learning also has a district adoption in Garland Independent School District in Texas. As well as a 42 middle school adoption in the Kansas City Missouri School district.
ISL Competitions
They are also the only curriculum producing company to host international competitions for the courses they offer. These competitions are The Future Game Designer Competition and the Search and Rescue Robot Competition
