Horsehead Water Ski Club

The Horsehead Water Ski Club is Australia's oldest water ski club. Established in 1958 by a small group of skiers near Horsehead Creek, Devonport Tasmania, the club is now based at Lake Barrington. As of 2010 the club has approximately 200 members.

World record attempts

Over the past few years the club has been attempting to break the World record for the most water skiers towed behind a single boat. The current record of 100, set in 1986, is held by Cairns & District Powerboat and Ski Club. The unwavering support of the Grining Family, World Heritage Cruises, have made these attempts possible by generously providing the use of their $5 million dollar Gordon River Cruise catamaran 'The Eagle'.

The following attempts have taken place at Macquarie Harbour, Strahan, Tasmania:.

  • 2008: The first attempt on Saturday February 2nd to tow 121 skiers was unsuccessful due to rope problems damaging the boom. Organisers worked late into the evening to construct a new boom to use the following morning. The Sunday February 3rd attempt was also unsuccessful due to poor weather conditions damaging equipment.
  • 2009: Undeterred the club returned on January 31st for another shot at the record. Once again equipment failure led to another unsuccessful attempt.
  • 2010: Determined, the club returned once again on January 30th, this time falling just two short of the World record with 99 skiers crossing the finish line.

Undeterred the organisers, skiers and World Heritage Cruises are confident their next attempt will be a success.
