Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Muzaffarpur
Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Muzaffarpur is a government-funded tertiary cancer care hospital located in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, India. It is a constituent unit of the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) and operates under the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. The hospital provides specialised oncology services to patients from Bihar and neighbouring states.
History and development
- Origins and Planning (2018–2020)
The Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital in Muzaffarpur was announced in 2018 as part of the Tata Memorial Centre’s initiative to expand cancer care to underserved areas. The hospital was planned to improve access to specialised oncology treatment for people in north Bihar and nearby regions.
The Bihar government allocated around 15 acres within the Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) campus for the project. The initial plan envisioned a full-fledged tertiary care cancer hospital with multiple specialised departments.
- Early Services and Construction (2021–2023)
In early 2021, a 50-bed modular oncology unit started functioning. It offered outpatient consultations, chemotherapy, minor surgeries, preventive oncology services, and palliative care, even before the main hospital building was completed.
During this period, the Department of Atomic Energy approved funding for the main hospital’s construction. The sanctioned budget was approximately ₹198 crore, and the work progressed in phases, including building infrastructure, procuring equipment, and hiring staff.
Operational Expansion and Full Commissioning (2024–2025) The hospital gradually expanded its facilities, adding diagnostic labs, surgical theatres, and supportive care services. By 2023, it had outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, operation theatres, intensive care units, and radiology departments.
- Inaugration
On 22 August 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the fully operational hospital. The completed facility, built at an estimated cost of ₹570 crore, includes multiple outpatient departments, intensive care units, operation theatres, radiotherapy and brachytherapy units, a blood bank, and specialised oncology departments. The hospital now provides local patients with advanced cancer treatment that previously required travel to larger cities.

The hospital is located within the campus of Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital at Uma Nagar, Rasulpur Saidpur Bazid, Muzaffarpur, Bihar.

The Samparda Singh Memorial Radiotherapy Centre at the hospital was established with financial support from the Alkem Foundation. According to published reports, the facility is equipped with linear accelerators, CT simulators, brachytherapy units and other radiotherapy technologies and serves patients from north Bihar and nearby regions.
