Haris Rashid
Haris Rashid (a.k.a H. Shaikh) (born 16 January 1963) is a celebrated laparoscopic surgeon and general surgeon in Ireland, Pakistan and United Kingdom. Based in Karachi, Pakistan Rashid introduced scarless surgery of gallblader and scarless Surgery of appendix to Pakistan in 2009. He is a pioneer in the field of single port access surgery in Pakistan.
Early life
Haris was born in the cosmopolitan port city of Karachi, Pakistan. His father, Abdul Rashid Shaikh, was a famous engineer in Pakistan and rose to the highest echelon of government service as Provinicial Secretary and Additional Federal Secretary, and provided consultancy to the World Bank. Haris' uncle, Abdul Wahab Shaikh, was another famous engineer in Pakistan, who also rose to the highest echelons of government service as a Federal Secretary; he is still an advisor to the Governor of Sindh, Ishrat-ul-ibad.
Education
Haris had a distinguished scholastic and extra-curricular career. As a pre-medical student, he took the top spot in his alma mater on graduation; he received top grades and honors in all areas of science, including Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. As a young student, he excelled in cricket, debating, and swimming.
Haris completed his basic medical education at one of the premier centers of excellence in the field of medical sciences, in Pakistan, namely, Dow Medical College. At Dow, he was a distinguished student and graduated with his place in the college's Merit List.
Haris became a fellow of Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in general surgery. He then obtained specialization in Laparoscopic Surgery from the famous Louis Pasteur University, European Institution of Tele-Surgery (IRCAD/EITS) in Strasbourg, France.
Experience
After completing his basic surgical training in Ireland, he was accepted in the Irish Residency Program of Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He worked as a registrar and the senior registrar for four years and successfully completed his residency. He gained a wide experience in various areas of surgery under the resident rotation program. After completing his residency in Ireland, he accepted senior registrar job at Our Lady's Hospital, in the county of Navan, Ireland. He also worked at university hospitals, such as St. Vincent University Hospital, Beaumont University Hospital, and James Connolly Memorial Hospital.
As an appointee of National University of Ireland Galway (NUI), he also served as Surgical Tutor to Letterkenny General Hospital, during 2006 - 2007.
Achievements
In his Irish residency program, he gained expertese in Laparoscopic Surgery in different hospitals, in both elective as well as acute cases. He also gained expertese in Laparascopic cholecystectomy, Laparascopic Appendectomy, Laparascopic Hernia repair, and Laparascopic Bowl surgery.
In 2009, Haris made history in Pakistan by performing the first-ever "scarless" surgery in Pakistan. On September 7, 2009, he removed the gallbladder of a gallstone patient using this technique (Single Port Access Surgery), for the first-time in Pakistan. Again, on September 11, 2009, he made another breakthrough in the history of surgery in Pakistan by successfully performing scarless Laparascopic Appendectomy of a teen girl.
Current Work
Haris is presently Assistant Professor of Surgery at Ziauddin Medical University. In addition he is Consultant Laparoscopic & General Surgeon at dr. Ziauddin Hospital.
