History
Founded in 1991, GCC VB is the official men's volleyball team of Grove City College. The team competes in the 19 team Pennsylvania-Ohio Volleyball League7, along with Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Duquesne University, and others.
The team has always been very competitive but has been especially successful in recent years. They have had a lot of regular season success winning their division of the POVL three of the past four years, and has been ranked as high as 2nd nationally (which occurred in 2009). In postseason play the team has finished in the top 10 in every year they have competed in the NIRSA National Championship8 since 2006.
In the fall of 2009 the NCVF split from NIRSA creating two separate entities for collegiate club volleyball, Grove City will compete in the NCFV championships and attend their national championship tournament9 on April 1st-3rd 2010 in Louisville, Kentucky.
Traditions
The team usually starts play in late September and often competes in at least three tournaments in the preseason (October-December). Each preseason ends with the team hosting the annual Grove City Winter Classic, a tournament on the first Saturday of December, which often includes most of the best club D I, D II and alumni teams in the arena. The last five years the team has hosted the POVL Championship tournament in late March.
Officers
The team is a student run origination which means that aside from faculty advisor, all club positions are student-held. The club has 6 officer positions (President, Vice President, Captain (x2), Treasurer, and Chaplain), and a club member is elected to a position after that year’s postseason (usually in May) and that member holds that position all the way until the next May.
