GreenCells
GreenCells is a company that provides consumers an alternative to the destructive e-waste cycle, by providing a better value through a solution focused on the core principle of environmental stewardship: reuse. GreenCells was founded in 2005 by Brian Moore and Jay Hines.
GreenCells meets consumer needs in two key areas of today’s market: secondary market cost benefits and concern for the environment. While, nearly half of surveyed consumers in the market for cell phones would choose one that is considered green, only 7% of these consumers said they would pay a premium to have a green phone.
Reuse and recycling
Currently, average U.S. cell phone users replace their cell phones every 12 months— long before the typical five-year lifespan of the devices. Additionally, more than 100 million cell phones are discarded annually; and, in 2007, only 10 percent were recycled. Since inception, GreenCells has sold hundreds of thousands of refurbished and reused cell phones.
GreenCells collects cell phones that are refurbished (with used parts) and sold for reuse. Obsolete or nonfunctional phones are dismantled and recycled to reclaim valuable materials—such as gold, silver, and palladium—from circuit boards. GreenCells zero-waste policy dictates that all donated materials are recycled, including cardboard, paper and plastic shipping.
