Frank Whitaker

Frank Whitaker (1868-1951) was an Irish soccer player and administrator who played for Bohemians during the 1890s.

Whitaker was one of the most important figures in the early days of football in Dublin. He was a founding member of Bohemian F.C. in 1890 along with the likes of Joseph Whelan. These founders met at Gate Lodge in the Phoenix Park to have their first meeting in September 1890 at which the new club was formed. There was a vote on whether to call this new club Bohemians or Rovers and Whitaker's proposal of Bohemians won.

Whitaker was then appointed the club's first ever Hon. Treasurer and he doubled up this role with playing in the Bohs DeFence for the club's early years. During his lifetime Frank helped set up several other football clubs apart from Bohemians including that of the Mater Hospital, Dublin in November 1891.

Off the field of play, he spent 10 years practicing as a doctor before entering the Hospitaller Order of St. John where he was known as Brother Francis de Sales. Frank died in 1951 aged 83.
