Emily Gertz
Emily Gertz is an American journalist, editor and environmentalist, specializing in online news, information and community in the New York City area.
Gertz completed a master's degree in Environmental Studies at the University of Oregon in the mid-1990's. For nearly two years in the late 90's, she was producer for Environmental News at OregonLive, the online arm of The Oregonian, Oregon's largest newspaper. She was also an online community host at Petopia.com, ZDTV.com (for the "Big Thinkers" tv show), Netscape, and other systems, and has been a volunteer community host on The WELL, one of the oldest virtual communities in continuous operation, since the mid-90's. In 2000 Gertz was a content strategist with the now-defunct consulting firm Scient; from 2001-2002, New Media & Technologies Manager at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts; and from 2002-2003, Senior Web Producer for SpaFinder Magazine .
Gertz has been a contributor to the popular environmental website Worldchanging since 2004, where she has written on a broad array of topics, from ecosystems, endangered species and agriculture, to green business, to art and pop culture, to technology and activism. She contributed several sections to the project's book Worldchanging: A User's Guide for the 21st Century,
During the fall of 2007, Gertz has been teaching an independent study at the Gallatin School at New York University, on "Digital Environmental Journalism." She also works with the New York-based Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance as an online editorial and tech strategist.
In her work, she often focuses on environmental angles on human health, human rights, art and pop culture, and technology. Her articles includes ongoing contributions to Grist, the environmental news magazine. . She has also contributed to Plenty Magazine, BushGreenwatch, and other independent publications.
From August to November 2007, she was the Interim Managing Editor of Worldchanging.
