Computype
Computype is a family-owned American company based in Roseville, Minnesota. It develops identification, labeling, and tracking solutions for industrial and regulated sectors. The business began in 1966 as a computer typesetting service and transitioned to barcode production in 1984, becoming a major supplier of tire bead labels to customers in over forty countries and a leading provider of Donation Identification Number (DIN) labels for the American Red Cross.
The company operates a manufacturing center in Saint Paul, Minnesota. It has added an ISO Class 7 cleanroom there to produce contamination-controlled labeling for the medical industry.
Computype has been recognized in the Star Tribune’s Top Workplaces program.
History
The organization was founded in Minnesota in 1966 as a computer typesetting service. It secured its first DIN label contract with the American Red Cross in 1983. In 1984, the company refocused on barcode manufacturing, expanding into industrial and laboratory labeling solutions. It later introduced automated histology slides and Cured Ink Direct Marking.
Computype has maintained operations in Roseville for more than four decades, expanding its facilities to support staff collaboration, research, and testing.
European restructuring
In March 2021, UK converter Mercian Labels acquired part of Computype Europe following a strategic review by Computype. Computype stated that the transaction allowed it to refocus on core markets while ensuring continuity for affected customers.
