CipherOptics, Inc. is a Raleigh, North Carolina based information security company, notable as one of the leaders in policy and key management for network encryption technology.

The company's products are used in wide-area networks, metro-area networks, data centers, and wireless networks, . CipherOptics customers include Fortune-100 and multi-national corporations, government agencies, financial institutions, and utilities.

History

CipherOptics was founded by Michael Doss and Dennis Toothman in 2000. Originally funded from a Lucent Technologies grant, the company’s initial focus was on encrypting high-speed fiber optic links. Through the 2000’s the company expanded its’ offering to other Layer 2 (Ethernet) and Layer 3 (IP) technologies. In 2006 the company released the CipherEngine solution, the industry’s first purpose built policy and key manager for network wide encryption. In 2009 CipherOptics added the ability to support Layer 4 (TCP/UDP) allowing service providers to secure data while preserving netflow and traffic shaping capabilities. In July of 2009 Thomas J. Gill (formerly the CEO of FORE systems) was named Chairman and CEO of CipherOptics.
