Chordicoccus
Chordicoccusis a genus of Gram-positive, anaerobic bacteria in the familyLachnospiraceae''. The genus was described in 2023 and currently contains one validly published species,Chordicoccus furentiruminis''.
Taxonomy
The genus name Chordicoccus is derived from Latin chorda, meaning "string", and Neo-Latin coccus, meaning "coccus", referring to the chained arrangement of short coccoid cells.
The type species is C. furentiruminis.
Description
Members of Chordicoccus are anaerobic bacteria belonging to the family Lachnospiraceae. The type strain of C. furentiruminis was isolated from the rumen contents of a healthy Angus steer.
Ecology and research
Chordicoccus furentiruminis has been studied as part of mixtures of native rumen microorganisms administered to beef cattle. A microbial supplement containing C. furentiruminis, Prevotella albensis, and Succinivibrio dextrinosolvens was evaluated for effects on growth performance, methane emissions and the rumen microbiome in beef cattle. A 2025 study of Angus heifers under a high-grain challenge also included C. furentiruminis in a six-strain native rumen microorganism inoculum and reported changes in animal performance and rumen microbial interactions.
