Center for Excellence in Basic Sciences ,Mumbai

The Department Of Atomic Energy and the University of Mumbai have set up the Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences CBS, that offers undergraduate education and research opportunities.

It is a residential campus.

It was established recently in 2007. The teaching faculty consists of regular members and visiting faculty from nearby institutions like the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research [TIFR], Bhabha Atomic Research Centre [BARC], Indian Institute of Technology [IIT] and from the University of Mumbai and nearby colleges. CBS is an autonomous institute and frames its own rules for its functioning. The degrees are, however, awarded by the University of Mumbai. The supreme decision making authority for CBS is the Governing Council which comprises eminent scientists and educationists. Currently, Dr Anil Kakodkar is the Chair of the Governing Council and Dr V.V. Khole, Vice Chancellor, University of Mumbai, is the Co-Chair.

The institute is located in the University of Mumbai's Kalina campus, near the Mumbai international airport.

The programs offered currently are:

  • 5 year Master of Science: [Physics/Mathematics/Life Sciences]
  • Ph. D. : [Physics/ Life Sciences]

The admission to the Master of Science course is through an entrance exam NEST (http://nest.niser.ac.in/).
