Cat Angel Network
Cat Angel Network is a not-for-profit no-kill cat rescue organization dedicated to improving the situation of unwanted and abandoned cats in the community.
History
Cat Angel Network (CAN) was founded in 1996, with the mission to be an all-volunteer, not-for-profit 501(c)(3), no-kill cat rescue organization. CAN is dedicated to improving the grave situation of unwanted and abandoned cats and kittens in northern Chester County, Pennsylvania.
CAN works to control the enormous overpopulation of cats by following its mission of preventing the suffering of abandoned and unwanted cats through rescue, spay/neuter, medical care, shelter, and adoption to loving, responsible homes, and educating the public AbOUT the proper care of cats and the importance of spaying/neutering.
CAN maintains a private shelter in northern Chester County, Penn., foster homes, and adoption centers at two PetSmart Store locations: Downingtown and Pottstown, Penn. CAN is staffed entirely by non-paid volunteers, therefore all the money received goes directly to caring for cats and funding the Trap-Neuter-Return program .
Trap-Neuter-Return
Cat Angel Network endorses and participates in the Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program. TNR is a way of humanely trapping cats that are feral, spaying or neutering them, vaccinating them for rabies and returning them to their colony.
A feral cat is defined as a cat born and raised in the wild, or one abandoned and becoming wild, that lives in a group called a colony. Most feral cats can handle little or no human contact, and as such will often be too wild to be tamed and adopted by people. The number of feral cats in the U.S. is estimated to be in the tens of millions .
While many communities chose to control feral cats via inhumane and outdated ways, it has been shown that TNR is the least costly, the most efficient, and the most humane way to stabilize and manage feral cat populations .
Events
To help find unwanted cats new homes, CAN holds an “adopt-a-thon” every Saturday and Sunday at two PetSmart locations: Downingtown (Business Route 30 East of Downingtown), and Pottstown (Route 100 South of Pottstown), Pennsylvania. All fostered cats that are not in the shelter are brought in for the weekend to help them find good homes.
CAN holds two annual fundraisers: a Spring Concert in April and a Fall Auction in October. CAN’s only two source of income are adoption fees and donations.
