Camp Jackson Fire Protection District
The Camp Jackson Fire Protection District is located in Cahokia, Illinois. It protects parts of the City of Centreville, Unincorporated St. Clair County, and the Village of Cahokia. Its BOUNDARIES of protection are I-255 to the North, the Levees to the South, Lakewood Dr to the East, and the canal west of Lloyd Ave to the West. Its total area of coverage is approximately 2 square miles.
The Fire Department was formed in 1953. The department was formed by citizens of the area after a number of fires occurred and were poorly handled by the Alorton Fire Department that covered that area.
It is an area comprised mostly of 1 story single family homes and used car lots, that litter the area along camp jackson rd. It protects the Touchette Regional Hospital in Centreville. It also covers 4 major Cahokia School District Schools. Fort Bowman Academy, Wirth Middle School, Lauemier, and Centreville School.
The department consist of one firehouse, located at 3201 Camp Jackson Rd. The department is composed of all volunteers, many of whom do not live in the district. These members typical will conduct shifts at the station. The department has five pieces of apparatus, two pumpers, one tanker, a reserve tanker, and a brush truck.
The department responds on approximately 400 calls a year. The department does not respond on medical emergencies unless requested by the EMS agency. The department receives mutual aid from Cahokia fire department, Church Road Fire Department, and Alorton Fire Department. Other neighboring departments are also called in the event of larger fires.
The area is typically low income and suffers from a number of arson fires a year. The area was originally established as a housing area for railroad workers that worked in the area.
