Astra Randkivi

Astra Randkivi (January, 1926 - August, 1944) was an Estonian partisan fighter from World War II.

Biography

Astra Randkivi was born on January, 1926 in Tallinn, capital of Estonia. She spent her childhood on the islands of Hiiumaa and Pakri. Astra went the elementary school on the island of Hiiumaa. On May, 1941 she joined the Komsomol while in school. During the Occupation of Estonia by [...] Germany in July 1941, although she was only 15 years old, Astra responded to the call from Komsomol and joined the fighting againt the Nazis in the Extermination Battalions where she served as nurse. She was captured. During the transport to the concentration camp, she managed to escape in the city of Jõhvi, and to steal a hand grenade and a machine gun from Jõhvi airport. After that, she joined the partisans near the Kiviõli ashes mountains. Astra was among the organizers of the escape of Jews and Soviet prisoners of war from the KZ Goldfields concentration camp in Kohtla.
